The Premium Madeira Wine Tours is a 6 day (7nights) trip guided and planned around wonderful Madeira Wine flavors and the best cuisine in the island! Come explore one of the most exotic and amazing wine-growing regions in the world.

 

Overview 

The program includes tastings of extraordinary old wines dated back from the nineteen-century with visits to five producers of Madeira wine, including Vinhos Pereira de Oliveira, Blandy's Vinhos Barbeito, Justino madeira Wines and Henriques & Henriques.

This is also a journey through time, we’ll go through 5 centuries of history and so many stories to tell. Together so many episodes would give birth to an extraordinary film script. If Madeira script didn’t exist it had to be invented!

Madeira Wine was able to fascinate great personalities from all over the world and gained an incredible status in the American society of the 18th and 19th centuries, being considered by the upper crust as “The King of The Wines”. It became the favourite drink of most of the Founding Fathers and it was used to taste to the Celebration of the Independence of the newly born Nation. In Europe, England was the main importer of this fortified wine that has also travelled endless routes to the East and West Indies. This voyages determined the character of the wine itself, since this trips revealed that the exchanges of temperatures passing the tropics and the balance of the ships contributed to the ageing and complexity of the Wine. Madeira is an extremely versatile island, rich in impressive landscapes, also known for its peaks and beautiful mountains, amazing clean seawater, Laurel ancient forest of Laurel and mild climate.

Funchal is the island's capital, a city of just over 150,000 inhabitants where the natural beauty joins a cosmopolitanism that offers everything, from excellent restaurants, hotels diverse cultural circuits to very original festivities as the Flower Festival, New Years Eve and of course the Wine Festival!
The program of the Premium Tours could not help but match the best cuisine with the best wines. We selected a set of restaurants and meals wishing to present you not only the diversity of local ingredients in traditional combinations but also more sophisticated and modern styles.

The trip will be led and guided by Rita Galvão a Madeira Wine specialist, born and resident on the island, being connected to the Madeira Wine sector for over 10 years.

Premium Madeira Tour Program 

 

Day 1
Arrival, transfer and check in at hotel.
Lunch at the hotel. In the afternoon it will be held a Masterclass Introduction to Madeira Wine lasting one and a half hours. In the evening a welcome dinner will be offered in Uva restaurant at The Vine Hotel.

Day 2
The day will begin with a visit to the company Pereira D'Oliveira. The company is managed by founders descendants. Nowadays 3 brothers represent the fifth generation of knowledge and experience dedicated to the production, marketing and export of Madeira Wine. This Producer is widely recognized for the considerable stock of old and rare wines.
Lunch will take place at Quinta das Vinhas in Calheta, overlooking the vineyards, and the blue sea-waters.
In the afternoon those who so wish may take a walking tour of the Levada do Norte, starting in the larger municipality of Estreito de Câmara de Lobos. This will take you to see the inside of Madeira and the merge of our vineyards with the impressing Laurel Forest.

 

 

Day 3
In the morning we will visit Vinhos Barbeito. This is the most recent producer of Madeira Wine, dated from 1946. Today it is recognized as an innovative brand and even somewhat irreverent, producing wines full of vigor and own style.
After passing through Cabo Girão one of the main attractions of the island being one of the biggest cliffs in the world then we will visit the mythical Fajã dos Padres where the so famous grape of Malvasia was first planted. In Fajã dos Padres we will have a special tasting of Madeira held on the family cellars, followed by a lunch by the sea.
We will return to Funchal in a yacht offering a beautiful view of the coast running from Câmara de Lobos to Funchal.

Day 4
Early in the morning we will cross the island towards São Vincent in the splendid and pristine north coastline to visit some of the most emblematic vineyards in second largest grape producing county of Madeira. Here you will be visiting the São Vincent’s cellar where young still wines are produced, among which the white wines stand out. Lunch will take place in Quinta do Furão which is surrounded by breath taking views and interesting wine culture. On returning to the Funchal, in the afternoon we will visit, the largest producer of Madeira wine, Madeira Justinos Wines, and taste some amazing wines. This company was established on the island of Madeira in 1870 and until 1953 it was a family-oriented business, located in the center of Funchal. It was in 1993 that this company went international, when joined one of the largest French groups of distribution of wines and spirits.

Day 5
The morning of the fifth day will be free. Some circuits may be recommended.
Lunch will take place in Câmara de Lobos, where the traditional dish of skewered meat will be served, with subsequent visit to the Madeira Wine producer Henriques & Henriques. The company was founded in 1850 and is one of the few companies to own their own vineyards. In 1995, the Company decided to plant in the parish of Quinta Grande, a new vineyard near the winemaking centre, maintaining the tradition of investing in the vineyards for more than 200 years.
Dinner will take place in Gallo D'Oro restaurant , at the Cliff Bay Hotel, the only Michelin-starred restaurant in Madeira being chef Benoit responsible for the cuisine.

 

 

Day 6
Day 6 begins with a tasting at Blandy’s Wine cellars and a visit to the company's museum. Followed by lunch at the vintage room of Blandy’s Lodges. For 200 years, Blandy’s Madeira has been synonymous with quality Madeira wine.
The Blandys are unique in being the only family of all the original founders of the Madeira wine trade to still own and manage their own original wine company.

In the afternoon we suggest a walk through the historic center of Funchal, walking by the circuit of the Wine City.
The farewell dinner will take place at Reid's Hotel. Set in subtropical gardens overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, the Belmond Reid's Palace hotel built more than a century ago, is the luxury hospitality icon of Madeira. Romantic, historical and also full of stories to tell, this secular hotel has an idyllic location on top of a beautiful cliff and was a popular location amongst many celebrities such as Winston Churchill, Bernard Shaw, to name a few big names.
